Components of Energy Expenditure

In general, daily EE comes from five major components:

Resting energy expenditure (REE)

Resting energy expenditure is the biggest component of energy expenditure.

Exercise or Voluntary physical activity (VPA)

Involuntary Physical Activity or Non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT)

Diet Induced Thermogenesis (DIT)

Cold-induced thermogenesis (CIT)


What does all this mean?

If you want to lose weight by increasing energy expenditure, boost REE is your best bet. Since REE is mostly related to lean mass, build more muscles, increase bone mineral density, will probably help you more than regular exercise.
